Less Keyboard, More Action: Be a Change Maker

Our world is increasingly turning to frazzled bits of political, racial, and social unrest. While today may not be any worse than past points in history, our constant access to news and social media means we’re bombarded by tragedy and controversy at lightning speed. The gravitational pull of outrage is strong.

As a result, the keyboard warrior nation grows larger daily. Scrolling through endless posts spewing opinions like fact – some of which I even agree with wholeheartedly. However, it feels like constant noise, more harmful than helpful. It’s draining, and more importantly, its ineffective. No heart has been changed from a heated instastory or half-baked comment made in anger.

The world doesn’t need more online outrage. It needs real-world action.
It’s time to step off the keyboard soapbox and do something.

What we need now are peacemakers and doers. People who show up and serve. People out there doing the hard things and making a difference. People who step into the mess, bring light into dark places, and make a difference—whether in one life, one community, or one cause.

I recently spent time volunteering at a camp that serves teens in the foster care system. I’ve been involved in this organization for over a decade and I’ve seen first hand how action changes lives. These teens face overwhelming odds. The stats are stacked against them. These teens are at risk for drop out, trafficking, and other heartbreaking challenges. But because this organization comes along side them year after year, there are many success stories of teens entering college, finding success, and believing they matter.

They know joy and hope are within reach—because someone chose to show up.

During camp I can be the hands and feet. Outside of camp, I’m an advocate, amplifying their voices. But for me, without action, my words don’t hold weight. I choose to be both.

Are you passionate? Great. Let your voice be heard. But then, step away from the keyboard and back up your words with action.
Because when you do, your words become powerful. Purposeful. Life-giving.

Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

  • Volunteer at an animal shelter
  • Serve at a homeless shelter
  • Help at a food kitchen or pantry
  • Support a women’s shelter
  • Partner with existing organizations that serve widows, orphans, veterans, and families in need

There’s so much good to be done. Let’s be the ones who do it.
